Who can participate in volunteering?

Anyone aged 18 and over, motivated by permaculture, sustainable agriculture and community life, can register as a volunteer.

Is prior experience in agriculture or permaculture required?

No, no previous experience is required. However, motivation and interest in permaculture and ecology are essential.

What is the living environment and accommodation conditions?

Volunteers are accommodated in individual houses or in shared rooms with access to collective toilets and kitchens. The environment is simple and in harmony with nature.

What is the minimum and maximum duration of volunteering?

The minimum duration is 1 week and the maximum duration is 1 month, renewable.

What types of tasks do volunteers perform?

Do I need a visa to come to Togo?

Yes, a visa is required to enter Togo. Find out more from the Togolese embassy in your country.

Should I take out health insurance?

Yes, insurance covering medical care and repatriation is mandatory.

What currency is used on site?

The currency used in Togo is the CFA Franc (XOF). It is recommended to exchange some money upon arrival.

Are the meals suitable for specific diets?

Yes, please inform us in advance of your needs (vegetarian, gluten-free, allergies, etc.).

What should I bring for my stay? (non-exhaustive list)

  • Light but covering clothing to protect from the sun and insects

  • Kway, hoodie for evenings

  • Work shoes

  • Large backpack for travel

  • Small backpack for every day

  • Sun protection (cream, soft hat/cap, glasses)

  • Protection against mosquitoes: spray, mosquito net

  • Headlamp or torch

  • Reusable bottle, gourd

  • Notebook and pens for taking notes

  • Small first aid kit

  • Bath towel, swimsuit

Are there any participation fees to be expected?

Yes, each volunteer must pay participation fees which take into account the administrative management of AMÉNOPÉ and accommodation and catering costs. However, VISA costs, vaccination, insurance, plane, airport transfer, hotel night in Lomé (if you arrive late at night) and meals outside the Farm are not included in the participation costs.
The participation fee is 300 euros per week (40 euros mission fees, 200 euros accommodation costs, 60 euros meal costs + mineral water)

What personal budget should I plan?

Apart from the costs included in the participation fee, volunteers will have to pay for their plane tickets, VISA, vaccines, travel insurance, the first hotel night in Lomé reserved by AMÉNOPÉ, the transfer from Lomé to the project location (organized by AMÉNOPÉ). The rest of your personal budget will depend on what you want to buy on site and any visits you plan outside of the project. In general, if you are not making major visits (North of the country for example), a budget of between €100 and €200 per month (apart from participation fees) may be sufficient.

When and how should I pay the participation fee?

Payment of participation fees is made at the AMÉNOPÉ offices in EUR or FCFA. The preferred payment method is cash. For long projects (more than 1 month), payment can be made monthly or in cash upon arrival, at the volunteer's choice.

What vaccinations are required to volunteer in Togo?

The yellow fever vaccine is mandatory in order to enter Togolese territory. Checking the vaccination card is mandatory at Lomé airport. So don't forget to take it with you. It is also recommended to be vaccinated against: tetanus, meningitis, typhoid fever and epathitis. Bring a basic first aid kit for small injuries and everyday ailments.

What is malaria and what should I do to prevent it?

Malaria (or malaria) is a disease caused by a parasite of the Plasmodium genus, mainly transmitted to humans by the bite of a mosquito. Generally, symptoms manifest as a fever which may or may not be accompanied by headache, muscle pain, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, cough.

Preventive antimalarial treatment should be prescribed to you by your doctor. It is also advisable to bring mosquito repellent sprays (specific to tropical areas), to wear long sleeves and legs at nightfall and to bring a mosquito net.

Who will pick me up at the airport?

Whatever time you arrive, a member of AMÉNOPÉ will be present at the airport to welcome you. You will recognize him by his “AMÉNOPÉ” sign. In case of difficulty locating it or to warn of any last minute changes to your flight plan, you can use the contacts which will be provided to you before your arrival. Depending on the time of your arrival, the AMÉNOPÉ member will take you directly to the Farm or he will accompany you to a hotel provided for the occasion so that you spend the night there before taking the road to Agou the next day.
